Ferruginous Hawk in Montana

Royal Ferruginous Hawk surverying its kingdom

Ferruginous Hawk surveying its kingdom – Nikon D300, f6.3, 1/2500, ISO 640, Nikkor 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 400mm, natural light, not baited

Ferruginous Hawks fascinate me, they are large, handsome and regal raptors. This one just appears to me to be surveying its kingdom from the top of a ranch gate in the Centennial Valley.

I hope to have more opportunities with Ferruginous Hawks in the near future.

About Mia McPherson

I am a nature lover, wildlife watcher and a bird photographer. I first become serious about bird photography when I moved to Florida in 2004 and it wasn’t long before I was hooked (addicted is more like it). My move to the Salt Lake area of Utah was a great opportunity to continue observing their behavior and to pursue my passion for photographing birds.

  1. It looks great on that perch!

  2. Awesome shot of an awesome bird.

  3. Gorgeous!

  4. I love these hawks as well. Magical birds that make a lovely V in the sky. They sometimes remind me of winged lions:)

  5. I agree with your description Mia. As a former volunteer at Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s birdshow, I have seen a bird like this up close many times. I recommend this wonderful show of birds, most flying over your head as you watch, to anyone visiting the zoo. Nice to see such a fine example of this bird in the wild — thanks Mia!
