Something’s fishy

An Osprey with a Flounder over the GulfAn Osprey with a Flounder over the Gulf – Nikon D200, handheld, f6.3,  1.750, ISO 160, Nikkor 80-400mm VR at 135mm, natural light, not baited

A simple but fishy post today of an Osprey image taken 5 years ago in Florida. The flounder was large enough that I wondered how the Osprey could be gaining altitude. The Osprey; unlike some human fisherman, didn’t need to brag about his big his catch was and I am just grateful the fish didn’t fall on my head. No wonder Ospreys are called Fish Hawks, right?

About Mia McPherson

I am a nature lover, wildlife watcher and a bird photographer. I first become serious about bird photography when I moved to Florida in 2004 and it wasn’t long before I was hooked (addicted is more like it). My move to the Salt Lake area of Utah was a great opportunity to continue observing their behavior and to pursue my passion for photographing birds.

  1. Before I even read your text, I envisioned this Osprey trying to get up out of the water with this big flounder. As far as fish falling on your head, we were having lunch many years ago in Mendocino County and the subject of Ospreys came up with the proprietor –how many Ospreys we’d seen that day. She said, “you know you’re from Mendocino when a fish lands on your head.”

  3. Terrific photograph, Mia! A little crab stuffing, cole slaw, hushpuppies……I’m hungry.

  4. WOW!!! That is some BIG fish!!! And an unusual angle to capture…amazing that the bird could actually fly with such a big fish and the shape of the fish must have made the wind drag even more difficult.

  6. Wow. Though mind you (as the daughter of a fisherman) I think the Osprey’s wing span is talking about the one that got away…
