  • Calliope Hummingbirds are the smallest breeding bird in North America.
  • Calliope Hummingbirds have short tails and wings that barely extend past their tails they are resting. The also have thin short bills for a hummingbird. Males have long, purple-red gorget feathers that look like streaks on a white background, metallic green upperparts and sides and white underparts. Females and juveniles have pale rufous flanks, green upperparts, white underparts and small dark spots on their throats.
  • Calliope Hummingbirds are migratory. During the breeding season Calliope Hummingbirds can be found in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Baja California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, southwestern Alberta and British Columbia. They winter in northern to central Mexico. Preferred habitat during the breeding season includes open montane forests, and canyons. During the winter they can be found in chaparral, deserts and low brushy areas.
  • Calliope Hummingbirds feed on nectar, insects and spiders.
  • Calliope Hummingbirds lay 2 eggs which hatch in 15 to 16 days. The females incubate and they are polygamous.
  • A group of hummingbirds can be called a “tune”, “hover”, “shimmer”, or a “bouquet” of hummingbirds.
  • Calliope Hummingbirds can live to be at least 8 years of age.
