  • Common Loons are large, white spotted loons with black upperparts, white underparts, thick black bills, red eyes and dark green-black heads. In winter adults have white mottled underparts. throats and chins, dark upperparts and gray bills.
  • Common Loons are migratory. They breed from Alaska and northern Canada south to Washington, Montana, Massachusetts, and in Greenland and Iceland. The spend winters in the Great Lakes region, the Gulf, Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The preferred habitat of Common Loons are forested lakes and rivers.
  • Common Loons eat mostly fish and crustaceans.
  • Common Loons lay 1 to 3 eggs which hatch in 26 to 31 days. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous.
  • A group of loons can be called a “raft”, “asylum”, or “cry” of loons.
  • Common Loons can live to be around 30 years of age.
