Dryobates pubescens

  • Downy Woodpeckers are the smallest North American Woodpecker. Downy Woodpeckers have black and white upperparts, white underparts, black tails with white outer tail feathers spotted with bars of black. Male Downy Woodpeckers have red patches on their hind crown, females do not.
  • Downy Woodpeckers are not migratory although some northern birds may migrate further south and those in mountainous areas may move to lower elevations. They are found throughout most of North America to Central America.
  • Downy Woodpeckers prefer habitats that include open woodlands, deciduous forests, parks, suburbs, and gardens.
  • Downy Woodpeckers eat insects and seeds.
  • Downy Woodpeckers lay 3 to 7 eggs which hatch in 12 days. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous.
  • A group of woodpeckers can be called a “drumming” or “descent” of woodpeckers.
  • Downy Woodpeckers can live to be more than 11 years of age.
