Stelgidopteryx serripennis

  • Northern Rough-winged Swallows are stocky with brown upperparts, pale under parts and have pale brown throats. Their tails are squared and they have white undertail coverts. Sexes are similar.  Juvenile Northern Rough-winged Swallows have two cinnamon colored wing bars.
  • Northern Rough-winged Swallows are migratory. During the breeding season they can be found in all of the lower 48 U.S. States, parts of Canada and Mexico. During the winter they can be found in southern California south to southern Mexico, along the Gulf Coast and southern Florida. Habit preferences include cliffs, riverbanks, marshes and wetlands.
  • Northern Rough-winged Swallows forage for insects in flight.
  • Northern Rough-winged Swallows lay 4 to 8 eggs which hatch in 12 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
  • A group of swallows is called a “kettle” of swallows.
  • Northern Rough-winged Swallows can live to be at least 6 years old.
