Juvenile Western Kingbird begging for food from an adultJuvenile Western Kingbird begging for food from an adult – Nikon D810, f7.1, 1/1600, ISO 400, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light

Late last month I photographed a Western Kingbird family in Box Elder County where the juveniles kept begging for food from the adult. The behaviors and movements were very interesting and it was challenging to photograph them because they move so fast. The juveniles are as big as the adults and have mastered their flying skills.

Even though the adult has its back to me in this frame I like the pose of the juvenile Western Kingbird with the spread wings, the eye contact and the open bill. By now the young kingbirds are finding food on their own and will fatten up before they migrate south.

Life is good.
