Immature Pied-billed Grebe running on the water with its preyImmature Pied-billed Grebe running on the water with its prey – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/2000, ISO 400, -0.3 EV,Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light, not baited

A few days ago before I photographed the unexpected Barn Owl I also had fun photographing some Pied-billed Grebes that were feeding, preening and resting near the four-way at Farmington Bay WMA.

Although the Pied-billed Grebes are plainer looking than the Clark’s, Eared or Western Grebes I see here in Utah I enjoy photographing them because of their interesting behaviors and because they are so feisty at times.

I took a series of action photos of this immature Pied-billed Grebe running on the water with its prey as it was being chased by another grebe that was trying to steal the food this young grebe had caught. As I recall this grebe was able to evade its pursuer and was able to eat the fish. I’ll add the rest of the short series of this grebe being chased to my Pied-billed Grebe photo gallery later today.

Life is good.
