They are characterized by a distinctive black line running horizontally across their hindwings, which sets them apart from the similar-looking Monarch butterfly.<\/li>\n<li>Viceroy butterflies are found throughout most of North America, including the contiguous United States, parts of Canada, and Mexico. They thrive in wet habitats such as ponds, swamps, and riverbanks, where their host plants are abundant.<\/li>\n<li>Viceroy butterflies primarily feed on the nectar of flowers such as milkweeds, thistles, and other flowering plants. Their caterpillars feed on the leaves of willows, poplars, and cottonwoods, which makes them distasteful to predators.<\/li>\n<li>Viceroy butterflies have multiple generations each year, with adults emerging in late spring and continuing to fly until the first frost. The female lays 100 to 300 eggs, which hatch in about 4 to 9 days. The caterpillar stage lasts approximately 3 to 4 weeks, followed by a chrysalis stage of 7 to 14 days.<\/li>\n<li>Viceroy butterflies are known for their mimicry of Monarch butterflies, which helps protect them from predators.
