These swirly patterns in ice caught my eye because of the light and golden reflections from the vegetation on the shoreline of a neighborhood pond.<\/p>\n

It was Christmas Eve and for a little while the sun broke through the gray clouds that had hung over the valley all day long. I needed to stretch my legs so I walked around the pond photographing the mountain peaks covered in snow and the birds that I could get close to.<\/p>\n

I was almost done walking when the patterns in the ice made me stop and look at them more carefully. It had been warmer than freezing temps and the ice was slowly melting. The bright blue sky overhead shared its vibrant color with the ice.<\/p>\n

The patterns in the ice were mesmerizing to me and the golden reflections on the water added a depth that I appreciated. Noticing patterns in nature became a part of who I am a long, long time ago. That trait helps me find birds and wildlife.<\/p>\n

Not far from where I took these two images of very natural patterns in the ice, I cringed.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of trash receptacles near the pond. There is absolutely no reason for people to not properly dispose of their garbage. But sadly, there is always someone who won’t walk 15 feet to safely dispose of their trash. They may have developed a pattern of not giving a crap about leaving no trace.<\/p>\n

I couldn’t reach or retrieve the plastic cup because the ice wasn’t firm enough for me to walk on and the water was too deep for me to wade out to grab it. I hope the cup floated to the shore and some caring individual put the garbage where it belongs.<\/p>\n

Life is<\/em> good. It is better when we all care for the planet.<\/p>\n
