Bad weather and bad timing have kept me out of the field for a bit. Today, I am sharing some cute Red Fox kit photos I took almost a year after I moved to Utah.<\/p>\n

These fox kit photos have been in my galleries for years; I just haven’t shared them in a post. Today is as good a day as any to do so.<\/p>\n

The playful fox kits were near their den on the west side of the auto tour loop at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge<\/span><\/a>. The kits were tremendously fun to watch and photograph that morning.<\/p>\n

Curious and active are the top two words I would use to describe these fox kits. There were at least four of them, and I struggled at times trying to decide which of these furry babies to focus on.<\/p>\n

The young foxes were close to the edge of the road. After taking a few portraits of the kits, I removed my 1.4x teleconverter so I could capture some full-body images of them.<\/p>\n

The fox kits played with each other, scratched, stretched, rested, and investigated the area around their den as I photographed them. There were times that individual kits moved too close to the “mobile blind” I was in to focus on them. At that point, I would try to focus on the fox kits that weren’t so close.<\/p>\n

Red foxes vary in color, ranging from red, brown, and black to paler versions of these hues, including the “silver fox” with dark fur and silvery guard hairs. They are distinguished from other fox species in North America by the characteristic white tip at the end of their tails.<\/p>\n

These young fox kits were a bit dusty from the dirt they had rolled and played in just outside of their den.<\/p>\n

As I recall, the road out to the auto tour loop was closed soon after these photos were taken. The road was changed from dirt to blacktop during that time. I wish I had been able to get back out to take more photos of these kits before the refuge closed access to the auto tour loop that year.<\/p>\n

One day soon, I would love to find another den with fox kits.<\/p>\n

Life is<\/em> good.<\/p>\n
