Today, in celebration of National Bison Day 2025, I thought I\u2019d share two photos of these amazing and powerful mammals, which we almost lost to extinction. One image was taken on a desert island in Utah and the other on a tallgrass prairie in Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

\"AmericanAmerican Bison bull and the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island State Park, Davis County, Utah<\/span><\/p>\n

Antelope Island State Park<\/span><\/a> in northern Utah has a herd of American Bison that can be seen with the Great Salt Lake in the background.<\/p>\n

At times, other features like the Promontory Peninsula, the Wasatch Range, the Oquirrh Mountains, or smaller islands on the lake can be in the frame too.<\/p>\n

In this particular photo, the Promontory Peninsula is in the background.<\/p>\n

In October, the bison on the island are rounded up and given health checks. Some are sold, while others are added to herds in different locations to increase genetic diversity.<\/p>\n

\"AmericanAmerican Bison at Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Oklahoma, Osage County<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve<\/span><\/a> in Oklahoma has large herds of American Bison that roam and feed on the tallgrass. This photo was taken on January 1st of this year when a small herd crossed one of the the gravel roads on the preserve.<\/p>\n

Right now the bison at the preserve are being rounded up for wellness checks, which means they aren’t visible from the roads. As soon as the wellness check is completed, they will be released back onto the prairie towards the end of November.<\/p>\n

We almost lost American Bison, but fortunately they are being reintroduced into areas within their historical range. I\u2019m grateful. We need to do more to protect birds, animals, and wild areas.<\/p>\n
