I’m guessing they were treated something like canaries. In 1940 a small population of them were released from their cages and they spread throughout the east. And so a bird that was once common in the southwest is now common back east too.

Male House Finch coloration can range from deep reds to bright yellows but red is more common that yellows or oranges and the colors are determined by their diet when they are molting. He was feeding on wild sunflower seeds when I photographed him.

Life is good.

Mia

Click here to see more of my House Finch photos plus facts and information about this species.

House Finches are fairly common birds throughout the U.S. Mexico and into Central America but they didn’t used to be common in the eastern U.S.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

27,1022,697,2696,26
4004,970,2760,2761,11968,4620,3504,3495,2698,11957,2697,4062,4094,11967,4104,4095
post-17164","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-avian","category-davis-county-utah","category-farmington-bay-wma","category-house-finches","category-utah","tag-adult","tag-autumn","tag-coloration","tag-diet","tag-east","tag-fall","tag-finch","tag-finches","tag-haemorhous-mexicanus","tag-historic-range","tag-house-finch","tag-male","tag-marsh","tag-moved","tag-perched","tag-wetlands

https://www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/house-finch-male-perched-mia-mcpherson-3300.jpg
Last week I had the opportunity to take a nice long series of an orange variant male House Finch while it ate the seeds of a greasewood.
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/house-finch-male-orange-variant-mia-mcpherson-2791.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/house-finch-male-orange-variant-mia-mcpherson-2791.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1 1x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/house-finch-male-orange-variant-mia-mcpherson-2791.jpg?resize=525%2C300&ssl=1 1.5x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/house-finch-male-orange-variant-mia-mcpherson-2791.jpg?resize=700%2C400&ssl=1 2x
I was tickled to photograph this female House Finch last week in sunflowers that had gone to seed.
