Males are more colorful than the females although at this time of the year they are in nonbreeding plumage and can look more like the females. Mallards lay 5 to 14 eggs which hatch in 26 to 30 days and most of the hens I saw with chicks yesterday had large broods.

Life is just ducky.

Mia

Click here to see more of my Mallard photos plus facts and information about this species.

Because I was close I wasn’t able to get a single image with all of the ducklings and the hen in the frame so I focused on the Mallard hen and with one duckling resting right behind her.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

124,27,1148,965,26
4004,4237,4134,4717,5259,126,4070,4359,1604,4094,2063,4095
post-40219","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bear-river-migratory-bird-refuge","category-avian","category-box-elder-county-utah","category-mallards","category-utah","tag-adult","tag-anas-platyrhynchos","tag-chick","tag-dabbling-ducks","tag-duckling","tag-ducks-2","tag-female","tag-hen","tag-mallard","tag-marsh","tag-waterfowl","tag-wetlands

https://www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/mallard-hen-duckling-mia-mcpherson-9146.jpg
I know from experience that when I post Mallard photos and write about them here on my site that they don't seem to get as many views as other birds do.
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/mallard-ducklings-log-creek-mia-mcpherson-7391.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/mallard-ducklings-log-creek-mia-mcpherson-7391.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1 1x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/mallard-ducklings-log-creek-mia-mcpherson-7391.jpg?resize=525%2C300&ssl=1 1.5x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/mallard-ducklings-log-creek-mia-mcpherson-7391.jpg?resize=700%2C400&ssl=1 2x
This morning I am sharing photos of Mallard ducklings and blooming White Water Crowfoot taken in a creek high in the Wasatch Mountains.
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/mallard-duckling-white-water-crowfoot-mia-mcpherson-2003.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/mallard-duckling-white-water-crowfoot-mia-mcpherson-2003.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1 1x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/mallard-duckling-white-water-crowfoot-mia-mcpherson-2003.jpg?resize=525%2C300&ssl=1 1.5x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/mallard-duckling-white-water-crowfoot-mia-mcpherson-2003.jpg?resize=700%2C400&ssl=1 2x
Mallard Ducklings –
