Nikon D500, f8, 1\/1000, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was kind of late in the morning, after 10 am, and the sun was already high in the sky plus the light was getting harsh or I would have spent far more time in that area photographing the birds that came in for the ripened fruit that hung heavy on the shrubs.<\/p>\n<p>I saw warblers, an immature Spotted Towhee, Cedar Waxwings, Black-capped Chickadees, Lazuli Buntings and a curious fawn in that area.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the sun was high I couldn&#8217;t resist photographing a juvenile Lazuli Bunting that flew in and perched on a Utah Serviceberry branch because to my eye the setting was both enchanting and very appealing.<\/p>\n<p>I also liked the cocked head of the young bunting and the eye contact I had with it.<\/p>\n<p>This Lazuli Bunting is young enough that it still shows some streaking on its chest and the gape is clearly visible, at this age I wouldn&#8217;t be able to tell if this is a female or a male so I wouldn&#8217;t feel comfortable labeling its gender.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1820&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Thomas Say<\/span><\/a>, a well known naturalist, gave a specimen of a Lazuli Bunting that had been collected in the Rocky Mountains of the western U.S. to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Lucien_Bonaparte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Charles Lucien Bonaparte<\/span><\/a>, another well known naturalist, who described the bunting and named it the Lazuli Finch (<em>Fringilla amoena<\/em>), today we know them as Lazuli Buntings (<i>Passerina amoena<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Lazuli Buntings are migratory and it won&#8217;t be long before they start migrating to their wintering grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Lately I have been seeing far more females and juveniles than I have adult males but I did see one male land in a tree on the hillside behind this serviceberry after I photographed this juvenile.<\/p>\n<p>Life <em>is<\/em> good.<\/p>\n<p>Mia<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onthewingphotography.com\/wings\/lazuli-bunting-images\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">here<\/span><\/a> to see more of my Lazuli Bunting photos plus facts and information about this species.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even though the sun was high I couldn&#8217;t resist photographing a juvenile Lazuli Bunting that flew in and perched on a Utah Serviceberry branch because to my eye the setting was both enchanting and very appealing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":154944,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[27,380,4594,26,773],"tags":[6523,6605,6666,6530,5817,4067,4071,1828,4270,7289,6522,4193],"class_list":["post-53621","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-avian","category-lazuli-buntings","category-morgan-county","category-utah","category-wasatch-mountains","tag-amelanchier-utahensis","tag-berries","tag-berry","tag-bunting","tag-buntings","tag-immature","tag-juvenile","tag-lazuli-bunting","tag-passerina-amoena","tag-serviceberries","tag-utah-serviceberry","tag-young"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"https:\/\/www.onthewingphotography.com\/wings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lazuli-bunting-juvenile-serviceberry-mia-mcpherson-5990.jpg","jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/p11Mom-dWR","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":104434,"url":"https:\/\/www.onthewingphotography.com\/wings\/2022\/07\/21\/young-lazuli-bunting-in-a-serviceberry\/","url_meta":{"origin":53621,"position":0},"title":"Young Lazuli Bunting In A Serviceberry","author":"Mia McPherson","date":"July 21, 2022","format":false,"excerpt":"I escaped into the coolness of the Wasatch Mountains yesterday morning for a few hours.
