I have no doubt about that. I did get the exposure right and I like the action.<\/p>\n<p>But there are far too many things about this photo that just don&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><ul style=\"--awb-size:16px;--awb-iconcolor:#939393;--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-1 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-down\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">I clipped the tip of the wing at the upper edge of the frame.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-down\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">The foreground is messy.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-down\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">If I cropped to eliminate the messy foreground there would not be enough room for the &#8220;virtual&#8221; legs that are under the water.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-down\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">I don&#8217;t have great eye contact.<\/div><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:24px;\"><p>What I could have done to improve this image:<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-background-image:linear-gradient(180deg, #ffffff 0%,#ffffff 100%);--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><ul style=\"--awb-size:16px;--awb-iconcolor:#939393;--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-2 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-up\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">My zoom lens was fully extended, I could have zoomed back to allow more room in the frame to avoid clipping the wing tip. If I had been shooting with a prime lens I could have moved back some.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-up\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">I was laying on the sand shooting down towards the egret that was in the water. I could have moved from the sand into the water in front of the bird to eliminate the messy, sandy shoreline altogether.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-up\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Normally in a frame you want to leave room for parts of legs, tails, feet or other parts of a subject that may be hidden by water or other features so that it doesn&#8217;t make the viewer feel the subject is missing its legs, feet or other body part, had I moved away from the shoreline into the water I could have avoided that issue.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa fa-thumbs-o-up\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Had I moved to a location in front of the egret I would have had better eye contact although the position of the wings would have appeared different at another angle.<\/div><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>This was a very cooperative bird because it was not focused on me, it was focused on hunting and eating prey so my moving may not have scared the bird away.<\/p>\n<p>I feel that when I am culling out my &#8220;bad&#8221; images that it is important to evaluate why the image didn&#8217;t work, to mentally list things I could have done to improve the quality and composition, a form of self critique. I also critique the images that I feel &#8220;work&#8221; well and make a mental list about those items too. It might be a pain to spend the time evaluating individual images but I feel that my photography has improved because of my practicing self critique.<\/p>\n<p>Normally images that don&#8217;t work I delete right after I view them but this one I kept because it was the &#8220;kick in the butt&#8221; I needed (and still need) to pay more attention to the problems I see in the frame at the time the image is created.
