Dark-eyed Juncos can seem tame near bird feeders but in the field I have found them to be a little on the skittish side. I don’t usually photograph birds at my feeders when I have them up so most of the photos I have of this species are taken out in the field where they are less than cooperative for me at times.

For a few seconds yesterday morning I had a male Dark-eyed Junco in my viewfinder who was perched on a fence post up close and I felt that I just had to take photos of it. Of the half dozen images that I took of the bird this was the only one that was sharp where I had the junco looking straight towards me. Two frames later the junco took flight and found a hiding place in a nearby bush.

Here in northern Utah I have seen Slate-Colored, Pink-Sided, Gray-Headed and Oregon Dark-eyed Juncos during the fall, winter and early spring. This male is from the Oregon group (also called race and subspecies) and that is the most common group of juncos that I see here. With our recent drop in temperatures I expect that I will be seeing more of these subtly beautiful, pink-billed birds out in the field and close to home.

Life is good.

Mia

Click here to view more of my Dark-eyed Junco photos plus facts and information about this species.

As common as Dark-eyed Juncos are I have surprisingly few photos of them in my galleries and that is why I get excited when I can add a new photo of them to my portfolio.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[27,2749,1022,697,26
4004,970,4142,2750,4620,898,6036,2751,7814,6037,4062,4094,2754,4104,855,4195,4095
post-61075","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-avian","category-dark-eyed-juncos","category-davis-county-utah","category-farmington-bay-wma","category-utah","tag-adult","tag-autumn","tag-close-up","tag-dark-eyed-junco","tag-fall","tag-fence-post","tag-junco","tag-junco-hyemalis","tag-junco-hyemalis-oreganus","tag-juncos","tag-male","tag-marsh","tag-oregon-group","tag-perched","tag-sparrow","tag-sparrows","tag-wetlands

https://www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/dark-eyed-junco-close-up-fence-post-mia-mcpherson-4990.jpg
When I lived in Virginia I could almost predict when the first snow would fall because the juncos showed at my feeders up a day or two before the first winter storm.
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dark-eyed-junco-oregon-mia-mcpherson-6530.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1
https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dark-eyed-junco-oregon-mia-mcpherson-6530.jpg?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1 1x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dark-eyed-junco-oregon-mia-mcpherson-6530.jpg?resize=525%2C300&ssl=1 1.5x, https://i0.wp.com/www.onthewingphotography.com/wings/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dark-eyed-junco-oregon-mia-mcpherson-6530.jpg?resize=700%2C400&ssl=1 2x
Earlier this week I photographed a male Dark-eyed Junco in snow close to home in poor, low light conditions.
