I may have seen and heard my last Uinta Ground Squirrel of the year last week while up in the Wasatch Mountains<\/span><\/a> looking for birds to photograph. Uinta Ground Squirrels start showing up above ground here in March and usually I see the last of them about this time of the year. Adult Uinta Ground Squirrels go underground first and the young of the year will head into their winter burrows later.<\/p>\n

I was surprised to see and hear one single Uinta Ground Squirrel on my last trip up into the mountains last week because it had been a while since my last sighting of these furry creatures that are also called “Potguts”. Usually by now I have seen the last of them for the season.<\/p>\n

I didn’t take nearly as many photos of these ground squirrels this year as I would have liked but then it seems like I never do. I especially enjoy taking images of the ground squirrel babies because they are cute and sometimes they get into tussles with their siblings and those are fun to photograph.<\/p>\n

I doubt that I’ll see anymore Uinta Ground Squirrels this year but I do have some fond memories and digital files of them from this spring that I hadn’t shared here yet.\u00a0These photos were all taken on the same day that I first saw and took images of adult Uinta Ground Squirrels eating, big, juicy earthworms<\/span><\/a> in April.<\/p>\n

Since that post already had seventeen images in it I decided not to add these photos to it then and now I am glad that I didn’t because I can use them now to say “Ta-ta for now” to these wonderful, interesting, and photogenic creatures.<\/p>\n

I’m going to miss these squirrels but I’m glad I took the time to photograph more of them this year.<\/p>\n
