Ursus americanus

  • American Black Bears are large omnivorous mammals with stocky bodies, short tails, rounded ears, and strong limbs equipped with curved claws. Adult males are typically larger than females and can weigh between 150 and 600 pounds depending on region and season.
  • American Black Bears are found throughout North America, from Canada and Alaska south into parts of Mexico, and across much of the United States except for portions of the Great Plains and arid southwest. American Black Bears inhabit forests, swamps, and mountainous regions, often ranging into meadows, clearings, and agricultural areas in search of food.
  • American Black Bears are omnivorous and feed on a wide variety of foods including berries, nuts, roots, insects, carrion, and occasionally small mammals or fish. Their diet shifts seasonally based on availability.
  • Female American Black Bears give birth in winter dens to one to four cubs, which remain with their mother for about a year and a half before becoming independent.
  • American Black Bears are excellent climbers and swimmers, relying on keen senses of smell and hearing to locate food.
  • A group of bears can be called a “sleuth” or a “sloth” of bears.
  • American Black Bears typically live for 10 to 20 years in the wild, though they are capable of living over 30 years.
