American Snout Butterfly Images, Facts and Information:

Libytheana carinenta

  • American Snout butterflies are small brown butterflies with distinctive elongated snout-like ‘nose’ and projections on their hindwings. The males and females look similar.
  • American Snout butterflies are found in the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. They are year-round residents in their range. American Snout butterflies live in dry, open habitats such as deserts, scrublands, and urban areas. They are often seen in parking lots and along roadsides.
  • American Snout caterpillars feed exclusively on hackberry trees. The adults feed on rotting fruit, tree sap, and flower nectar.
  • American Snout butterfly females lay their eggs singly on hackberry leaves. The caterpillars pupate on the tree and emerge as adults in about two weeks. American Snout butterflies are sometimes called “Hackberry Butterflies” due to their close association with hackberry trees.
  • A group of butterflies is called a “kaleidoscope”, “swarm”, or “flutter” of butterflies.
  • The oldest known American Snout butterfly lived for about 6 months in captivity
