Pachydiplax longipennis
- Blue Dasher dragonflies are medium-sized dragonflies with bright blue abdomens, green eyes, and clear wings with black pterostigmas. Males have powder blue abdomens, while females have black and yellow striped abdomens.
- Blue Dashers are found throughout most of the United States, southern Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and parts of Central America. They are most common in the eastern United States.
- Blue Dasher dragonflies inhabit a variety of wetland habitats including ponds, lakes, marshes, slow-moving streams, and ditches. They are often found perched on vegetation near water’s edge.
- Blue Dashers feed on small flying insects such as mosquitoes, flies, and moths, which they catch in mid-air.
- Female Blue Dasher dragonflies lay eggs in water or on floating vegetation. The eggs hatch into aquatic nymphs that develop underwater for several months before emerging as adults.
