Brown Thrasher Images, Facts and Information:

Toxostoma rufum

  • Brown Thrashers are medium-sized thrashers that belong to the Mimidae family. Brown Thrashers have a reddish-brown upper body with streaks of black, a white breast with heavy dark streaking, and a long, curved bill. Their wings are reddish-brown with white wing bars, and their tails are long and rounded.
  • Brown Thrashers are native to North America and can be found in various habitats such as woodland edges, thickets, scrublands, and gardens. They are primarily resident birds, meaning they do not migrate long distances. However, some populations in the northern parts of their range may move southward during the winter.
  • Brown Thrashers have a diverse diet, feeding on a variety of insects, spiders, small amphibians, snails, berries, fruits, and seeds. They use their long bills to probe the ground for insects and their strong feet to scratch and dig in leaf litter.
  • Brown Thrashers lay 2 to 6 eggs, which are incubated by both parents for about 11 to 14 days.
  • A group of Brown Thrashers can be referred to as a “mutation” or a “thicket” of thrashers.
  • Brown Thrashers have an average lifespan of 9 to 12 years in the wild.
