Psaltriparus minimus

  • Bushtits are tiny, large-headed birds that have gray-brown upperparts, paler underparts, long tails and tiny dark bills. Female Bushtits have light eyes, males and juvenile have dark eyes. Plumage can vary by geographic location. Coastal Bushtits have brown crowns, the Black-eared race have black masks and ear patches.
  • Bushtits are non-migratory. Bushtits are found in western North America from southwestern British Columbia to Mexico and from coastal California east to Texas.
  • Bushtits prefer habitats that include open woodlands, thickets, chaparral, sagebrush scrub, deserts, and pinyon pine and juniper forests.
  • Bushtits eat insects, spiders and small fruit seeds.
  • Bushtits lay 5 to 7 eggs which hatch in 12 days. Both sexes incubate, frequently at the same time. They are monogamous.
