Nymphalis californica

• The wings of California Tortoiseshell butterflies have ragged, irregular edges. The upper side of their wings are  orange with blacks spots and a wide black margin. The underside of their wings are a mottled dark brown that has a bark-like appearance.
• California Tortoiseshell butterflies can be found near chapparal growth, brushy areas, woodlands, and clearings as well as edges of forests, deserts, urban gardens and sky island mountains.
• California Tortoiseshell butterflies are known to have irregular population explosions.
