Camillus Crescent Butterfly Images, Facts and Information:
Phyciodes pulchella camillus
- Camillus Crescent butterflies are small orange and brown butterflies with black borders and fine white markings forming a crescent shape on the underside of the hindwings. The upper side of the wings shows bright orange with black spots and lines.
- Camillus Crescent butterflies are found in the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and parts of northern South America. They inhabit open fields, roadsides, pastures, and sunny forest clearings. Adults are often seen near moist ground and flowering plants.
- Adult Camillus Crescent butterflies feed on nectar from asters, fleabanes, and other low-growing composite flowers. Caterpillars feed on plants in the Aster family, especially sunflowers.
- Females lay pale green eggs in clusters on the undersides of host plant leaves. Larvae are dark with spines and feed communally in early stages before dispersing as they mature.
- Camillus Crescent butterflies are active from spring through fall in warm climates. Their flight is low and fast, with brief pauses for feeding or basking.
- A group of butterflies can be called a “kaleidoscope” of butterflies.
