Stagmomantis carolina
- Carolina Mantis are slender predatory insects with elongated bodies, large compound eyes, triangular heads, and raptorial forelegs. Females are larger than males and can reach up to 2-3 inches in length.
- Carolina Mantis are found in the eastern and southern United States, from New York to Florida and west to Colorado and Arizona. Carolina Mantis inhabit gardens, meadows, fields, and forest edges. They are often found on flowers, shrubs, and tall grasses.
- Carolina Mantis are carnivorous and feed on a variety of insects including flies, crickets, moths, and other small arthropods.
- Female Carolina Mantis lay 30-50 eggs in a frothy mass called an ootheca, which hardens to protect the eggs. Nymphs hatch in spring after overwintering.
- Carolina Mantis are sometimes called “praying mantis” due to their prayer-like stance when hunting.
- A group of mantids can be called a “blessing” of mantises.
