Lerema accius
- Clouded Skippers are small butterflies with brown wings featuring cloudy patterns of lighter and darker shades. Males and females have similar appearances, though females tend to be slightly larger.
- Clouded Skipper butterflies are found in the southeastern United States, from Texas to Florida and north to Virginia. Some populations extend into parts of the Midwest and Northeast.
- Clouded Skippers inhabit open, grassy areas such as meadows, prairies, forest edges, and disturbed habitats like roadsides and old fields.
- Clouded Skipper butterfly caterpillars feed on various grasses, including crabgrass, panic grass, and St. Augustine grass. Adults nectar on a variety of flowers, particularly those with purple or white blooms.
- Clouded Skippers lay single eggs on host plants. Caterpillars develop through several instars before pupating. There are multiple generations per year in most of their range.
- A group of skippers can be called a “flutter” or “library” of skippers.
- The lifespan of adult Clouded Skipper butterflies is typically only a few weeks.
