Melanoplus differentialis

  • Differential Grasshoppers are medium-sized insects with brownish-yellow or brownish-red antennae, yellow hind legs with black spines, and yellow feet. They are found in many colors.
  • Differential Grasshoppers are found throughout most of the United States, southern Ontario, Canada, and northern Mexico. They inhabit grasslands, open woods, lush vegetation, wet crop areas, wet meadows, creek-bottom lands, and urban areas like vacant lots.
  • Differential Grasshoppers eat grasses, forbs, crop plants, and fruit trees. They feed on corn, alfalfa, barley, soybean, wheat, giant ragweeds, common sunflowers, prickly lettuce, and garden vegetables like tomatoes and peas.
  • Differential Grasshoppers lay up to 8 egg masses in the soil, each containing up to 11 eggs. Eggs hatch in late spring, and nymphs grow rapidly in early summer. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis and become adults within a few days. Adults are found from July to October.
  • Differential Grasshoppers are often called agricultural pests due to their destructive feeding habits on crops.
  • A group of Differential Grasshoppers is often found moving in unbroken bands towards food sources.
  • The oldest known Differential Grasshopper lived for 2-3 months after hatching.
