Digger Bee Images, Facts and Information:
Anthophora urbana
- Digger Bees are found throughout North America in a wide range of habitats including gardens, fields, meadows, and sandy soils. They prefer areas with loose, well-drained ground suitable for nesting.
- Digger Bees feed on nectar and collect pollen from a variety of flowering plants. They are important native pollinators for wildflowers, fruits, and crops.
- Female Digger Bees excavate nesting tunnels in the ground, where they create separate brood cells. Each cell is provisioned with pollen and nectar formed into a compact ball upon which a single egg is laid. The larva develops underground, pupates, and emerges as an adult the following season.
- Digger Bees are non-aggressive and rarely sting unless handled.
- A group of Digger Bees is sometimes referred to as a “colony,” though they are solitary and do not form hives.
