Four-spotted Pennant Images, Facts and Information:

Brachymesia gravida

  • Four-spotted Pennant are medium-sized dragonflies with slender bodies, broad hindwings, and distinctive wing markings. Adults have dark brown to black bodies with pale abdominal spots, and each wing bears a prominent dark patch near the node. Males often show pale blue waxy-looking area on the abdomen as they mature.
  • Four-spotted Pennant are found across the southeastern and central United States, from North Carolina and Florida west to Texas and north into the Midwest. They inhabit ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving waters with abundant vegetation.
  • Four-spotted Pennant are aerial predators that feed on small flying insects such as mosquitoes, midges, and gnats. They capture prey midair using their spiny legs.
  • Females lay eggs by dipping the tip of the abdomen in water while in flight. The aquatic nymphs, or naiads, live among submerged vegetation, where they ambush small aquatic invertebrates and tadpoles until emerging as adults.
  • Four-spotted Pennant often perch on reeds, grass stems, or twigs, holding their wings horizontally and flying in quick, darting movements.
