Sunset view of Gunlock State Park, Washington County, Utah

Gunlock State Park Information:

  • Gunlock State Park, established in 1970, lies in the scenic red rock country of southwestern Utah, just 15 miles northwest of St. George.
  • The park centers around the tranquil waters of Gunlock Reservoir, created by the Gunlock Dam on the Santa Clara River. Its 266-acre reservoir and surrounding red cliffs provide important habitat for a variety of wildlife, including waterfowl, songbirds, coyotes, jackrabbits, lizards, and desert reptiles.
  • Gunlock’s dramatic contrast of deep blue water against towering sandstone formations creates a striking landscape for both wildlife and photographers. During spring runoff, water cascades down the red rocks in a series of spectacular waterfalls that have become a seasonal attraction within the park.
  • Ancient evidence of early Native American presence in the area ties Gunlock to the long human story of the Virgin River basin. Petroglyphs and other cultural remnants from the Ancestral Puebloan and Southern Paiute peoples offer a glimpse into their enduring connection to this rugged and beautiful desert environment.
