Halloween Pennant Images, Facts and Information:
Celithemis eponina
- Halloween Pennants are medium-sized dragonflies with delicate, vividly patterned wings resembling stained glass. Their wings are orange-yellow with dark brown or black bands, giving them a “pennant” or flag-like appearance when perched. Adults have slender bodies with light brown to reddish coloration, and males often display a more vivid hue than females.
- Halloween Pennant dragonflies are found throughout much of the eastern and central United States, from Florida north to southern Canada and west to Texas and Kansas. They inhabit ponds, lakes, marshes, and other still or slow-moving waters with abundant vegetation.
- Halloween Pennants are agile aerial hunters that feed on small flying insects such as mosquitoes, midges, and gnats. They often perch on tall grasses or reeds, fluttering like small flags in the breeze.
- Females lay eggs on or just above the water’s surface. The aquatic nymphs (naiads) live underwater where they prey on aquatic invertebrates before emerging as adults.
- Halloween Pennants are sometimes called “butterfly dragonflies” because of their habit of gliding and perching with wings spread like a butterfly.
- A group of dragonflies can be called a “swarm” of dragonflies.
