Honey Bee Images, Facts and Information:
Apis mellifera
- Honey Bees are small, social insects with hairy, golden-brown bodies, black bands, and transparent wings. They have compact heads with compound eyes and specialized mouthparts for collecting nectar. Workers average about ½ inch in length, while queens are larger and drones are stouter with broader bodies.
- Honey Bees are found throughout North America and are native to Europe, Africa, and western Asia. They inhabit hives built in tree cavities, rock crevices, or man-made structures such as apiaries. Honey Bees thrive in temperate environments where flowering plants are abundant.
- Honey Bees feed on nectar and pollen, which provide carbohydrates and protein. They convert nectar into honey and store it in wax combs as a food reserve for the colony.
- A queen lays all the eggs in the hive, producing workers, drones, and future queens. Colonies reproduce by swarming when a new queen emerges and a portion of the workers leave to form a new hive.
- Honey Bees play a critical role in pollination and agriculture, contributing to the reproduction of many wild and cultivated plants.
- A group of Honey Bees is called a colony or a swarm.
