Atalopedes huron
- Huron Sachem skipper butterflies are a small grass skipper butterflies. Males have orange uppersides with brown borders and a large brown-black stigma. Their undersides are yellow-brown with a faint chevron pattern on hindwings. Females have darker brown uppersides with lighter golden spots in the center. Their forewings have transparent white spots. The undersides of females is muddier and more olive-colored than males.
- Huron Sachem are found in the eastern and southern United States, ranging from New England to Florida and west to Texas and Nebraska.
- Huron Sachem skipper butterflies inhabit open, grassy areas including meadows, prairies, roadsides, gardens, and forest edges.
- Huron Sachem caterpillars feed on various grasses, while adults nectar on flowers such as asters, goldenrod, and coneflowers.
- Huron Sachem skipper butterfly females lay single eggs on host plants. Caterpillars construct shelters by tying grass blades together with silk.
- Huron Sachem skipper butterflies are also known as “Sachem Skippers”.
