Kodachrome Basin State Park Images and Information:
Kodachrome Basin State Park was designated a state park in 1962 and is located in south-central Utah, near the western edge of Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument.
The park spans over 2,600 acres and is known for its striking red, pink, and white sandstone spires, called sedimentary pipes, rising dramatically from the desert floor. These formations, numbering nearly 70, provide a vivid backdrop for diverse desert wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, lizards, jackrabbits, and many species of songbirds and raptors.
Kodachrome Basin’s landscape tells a story of ancient geological transformation. Once covered by a vast lake and later influenced by volcanic activity, erosion sculpted the soft sandstone into the extraordinary shapes seen today. The park’s rich terrain offers a living chronicle of Earth’s history, layers of time revealed in the vivid colors of the cliffs and canyons.
