  • Lesser Goldfinches are North America’s smallest goldfinch and they are found in the western U.S., Mexico, Central and South America. Lesser Goldfinches are small finches with black crowns, dark backs, wings and tails, their tails have dark markings. Males east of the Rocky Mountains are generally darker than those found from west of the Rockies. Female Lesser Goldfinches are smaller, duller and they lack the black cap.
  • Northern birds migrate.
  • Lesser Goldfinches prefer habits that include oaks and woodlands and will come to feeders for seeds. They can be found in grasslands, and the edges of forests.
  • The diet of Lesser Goldfinches is primarily seeds.
  • Lesser Goldfinches lay 3 to 6 eggs which hatch in 12 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
  • A group of goldfinches can be called a “charm”, “rush”, “treasury” or “vein” of goldfinches.
  • Lesser Goldfinches can live to be more than 7 years of age.
