Little Blue Heron Images, Facts and Information:

Egretta caerulea

  • Little Blue Herons are medium sized herons with slate gray-blue body plumage, purple-blue heads and necks, yellowish eyes, slightly decurved gray and black bills and long, dark legs and feet. During the breeding season the lores become bright blue. Juvenile Little Blue Herons start out white with greenish legs then become blue and white and piebald in appearance as they mature before obtaining their adult plumage.
  • Some Little Blue Herons are migratory while some are year round residents in their range. They are found along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Florida, the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, the West Indies, the southern Pacific coast into Mexico and southward into South America.  Little Blue Herons prefer freshwater habitats of ponds, marshes, lakes, swamps, lagoons and coastal marine areas.
  • Little Blue Herons eat fish, lizards, frogs, turtles, snakes, crabs, crayfish, shrimp, spiders, and aquatic insects. They will also eat beetles, grasshoppers and other insects.
  • Little Blue Herons lay 1 to 6 eggs which hatch in 22 to 24 days. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous, colonial nesters.
  • A group of herons can be called a “hedge”, “scattering”, “battery” and “rookery” of herons.
  • Little Blue Herons can live to be more than 13 years of age.
