Leucauge argyrobapta

  • Mabel Orchard Orbweavers are small, delicate spiders with rounded abdomens, long slender legs, and bright, often iridescent markings of green, yellow, and orange. Females are larger than males, measuring up to a quarter inch in body length, while males are smaller and more slender.
  • Mabel Orchard Orbweavers are found throughout the eastern and central United States, most commonly from the Midwest to the Southeast. Mabel Orchard Orbweavers inhabit gardens, woodlands, orchards, and shaded areas with shrubs and low vegetation. They are often seen resting in the center of their webs or hanging beneath leaves.
  • Mabel Orchard Orbweavers weave small circular orb webs, usually built close to the ground or among low branches. These webs capture flying insects such as gnats, mosquitoes, and small moths.
  • Female Mabel Orchard Orbweavers lay clusters of eggs in silken sacs, often attached to leaves or twigs. Spiderlings hatch in spring and disperse by ballooning on silk threads.
  • Mabel Orchard Orbweavers are sometimes called “orchard spiders” due to their common presence in orchards and gardens.
  • A group of orbweavers can be called a “cluster” of spiders.
