Mottled Duck Images, Facts and Information:

Anas fulvigula

  • Mottled Ducks are medium-sized dabbling ducks with mottled brown bodies, orange legs, dark eyes, long necks, and yellow to olive bills. Males and females look similar, though males often have brighter yellow bills while females have more olive-green bills.
  • Mottled Ducks are year round residents. Their range is primarily along the Gulf Coast of the United States from Florida to Texas, and they also inhabit parts of peninsular Florida. Unlike many duck species, they are mostly non-migratory.
  • Mottled Ducks thrive in freshwater and brackish habitats including marshes, ponds, coastal wetlands, rice fields, and moist grasslands.
  • Mottled Ducks eat seeds, aquatic vegetation, grasses, grains, and small invertebrates.
  • Mottled Ducks lay 8 to 12 eggs which hatch in about 24 to 28 days. The females incubate and care for the young, and the species is usually monogamous.
  • Mottled Ducks are sometimes called “Florida Ducks” or “Gulf Coast Ducks.”
  • A group of ducks can be called a “raft,” “paddling,” or “team” of ducks.
  • The oldest known Mottled Duck was 20 years old.
