  • The Northern Cottonmouth, also known as the Water Moccasin, is a large, venomous snake found in the southeastern United States. It has a thick, heavy body and a broad, triangular head that is distinct from its neck.
  • Northern Cottonmouths are found in the southeastern United States, ranging from eastern Texas to the Carolinas and as far north as southern Illinois and Indiana. They are semi-aquatic snakes, typically found near slow-moving bodies of water such as swamps, marshes, lakes, and rivers.
  • Northern Cottonmouths are carnivores, feeding on a variety of small animals including fish, frogs, rodents, birds, and other snakes.They use heat-sensing pits to detect warm-blooded prey and strike quickly to subdue it with their potent venom.
  • Northern Cottonmouths give birth to live young, with litters typically ranging from 3 to 20 snakes. The young cottonmouths are independent from birth and reach sexual maturity in 2-3 years.
