  • Orange Sulphur butterflies are medium-sized with yellow or orange wings and black borders. Males are bright orange with wide black borders, while females can be yellow, white or pale orange with irregular black borders. Both sexes have pale spots within the black border on the hindwings. The underside is yellow-orange with a distinctive double silver spot rimmed in reddish scales.
  • Orange Sulphur butterfliess are found across North America, with two to three overlapping broods from spring through fall. In the northern regions like the Adirondacks, they fly from June through October. These butterflies inhabit fields, gardens, roadsides and other open areas where their host plants from the pea family grow, such as alfalfa, clovers and sweet clovers.
  • The larvae (caterpillars) are green with pale stripes along the top and sides. They feed mainly on leaves of legumes like alfalfa, white clover and sweet clover, usually at night.
  • Adult Orange Sulphurs feed on nectar from various flowers including milkweeds, coneflowers, asters and goldenrods. They also obtain nutrients from mud puddles and other moist soil. Females lay single whitish eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. The eggs turn crimson within a few days before hatching into caterpillars.
