Graptemys ouachitensis
- Ouachita Map Turtles are medium-sized aquatic turtles with olive green shells marked by yellow lines and a prominent ridge down the back. They have distinct yellow spots on each side of the head. The have black lines through white eyes.
- Ouachita Map Turtles are year-round residents in rivers and large streams of the central United States, especially in the Mississippi River system. Ouachita Map Turtles thrive in clear, fast-moving rivers with sandy or rocky bottoms and bask on logs.
- Ouachita Map Turtles eat aquatic insects, snails, crayfish, fish, and some aquatic plants.
- Ouachita Map Turtles lay 6 to 22 eggs per clutch, usually in sandy soil near water from late spring to mid-summer.
- Ouachita Map Turtles are sometimes called “Sawbacks” because of their ridged shells.
- Ouachita Map Turtles can live 30 to 50 years.
