- Question Mark butterflies are medium-sized butterflies with distinctive orange and brown wings featuring a small white “question mark” on the underside of their hindwings.
- Question Mark butterflies are found throughout eastern North America, from southern Canada to Florida and Texas, with some populations in the southwestern United States.
- Question Mark butterflies inhabit deciduous woodlands, forest edges, parks, and gardens. They are often seen near elm, hackberry, and nettle plants, which serve as host plants for their caterpillars.
- Question Mark butterflies feed on tree sap, rotting fruit, and animal dung. Adults rarely visit flowers for nectar.
- Question Mark butterflies lay eggs singly or in small clusters on host plant leaves. Caterpillars feed on the leaves and undergo several molts before pupating.
- A group of butterflies can be called a “kaleidoscope” or “flutter” of butterflies.
- Question Mark butterflies can live up to 10-11 months, with some individuals overwintering as adults.
