  • Red-naped Sapsuckers are medium sized woodpeckers with black and white plumage, a white stripe on the wings, red crowns, throats and a red spot on the nape. The females usually have a bit of white right under their bills.
  • Red-naped Sapsuckers are primarily western birds found in habitats that include mixed deciduous forests which include willows and aspens, they also breed in montane forests.
  • Red-naped Sapsuckers drink sap and eat insects and fruits.
  • They are migratory although some populations are year round residents in their range.
  • Red-naped Sapsuckers are primary cavity nesters. They lay 3 to 7 eggs which hatch in 12 to 13 days. Both sexes incubate and are monogamous.
  • A group of sapsuckers is called a “slurp” of sapsuckers.
  • Red-naped Sapsuckers can live to be 4 years old or older.
