Rock Wren Images, Facts and Information:

Salpinctes obsoletus

  • Rock Wrens are medium sized wrens with speckled grayish upperparts, white throats and breasts with fine gray streaks and buffy flanks and bellies, white over black eye brows, and brown rumps. Their tails are have buff and dark bars.
  • Rock Wrens are partial migrants. Some are migratory and some move to lower elevations during the coldest months of the year.  Rock Wrens are found in arid and semiarid areas with exposed rock and in some alpine habitats.
  • Rock Wrens eat insects and spiders are they get the moisture they require from their prey.
  • Rock Wrens lay 4 to 10 eggs which hatch in 12 to 18 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
  • The life span of Rock Wrens is unknown.
  • A group of wrens can be called a “flight”, “chime”, “herd” or flock of wrens.
