Scarlet Skimmer Images, Facts and Information:

Crocothemis servilia

  • Scarlet Skimmer dragonflies are medium-sized, brightly colored insects with slender bodies, broad hindwings, and large compound eyes. Males are vivid red, while females and immature males are golden or yellowish brown. Adults typically measure about 1.5 to 2 inches in length.
  • Scarlet Skimmer dragonflies are native to South and Southeast Asia but have been introduced to parts of the Pacific and the Americas. They inhabit ponds, marshes, slow-moving streams, and other still or gently flowing freshwater habitats with abundant vegetation. Adults are often seen perched on twigs, reeds, or rocks near water.
  • Scarlet Skimmer dragonflies are aerial predators that feed on mosquitoes, flies, small moths, and other flying insects caught in flight.
  • Females lay eggs by dipping the tip of the abdomen into the water while hovering above the surface. The aquatic larvae, called nymphs, live in the water and feed on mosquito larvae and other small aquatic organisms before emerging as adults.
  • The Scarlet Skimmer is sometimes called the Crimson Darter or Ruddy Marsh Skimmer.
  • A group of dragonflies can be called a “flight” or a “swarm” of dragonflies.
