Townsend’s Solitaire Images, Facts and Information:

Myadestes townsendi

  • Townsend’s Solitaires are small plain gray thrushes with thin, white eye rings, pale rust patches on their wings and white outer tail feathers.
  • Some Townsend’s Solitaires are short distance migrants, some are year round residents and some simply move to lower elevations during the winter.
  • Townsend’s Solitaires are found in the western half of North America from as far north as Alaska to as far south as Mexico.
  • Townsend’s Solitaires prefer habitats that include pines, firs, montane coniferous forests, and in winter open juniper forests. They can be found from sea level in winter to around 11,500 feet in elevation during other seasons.
  • Townsend’s Solitaires eat worms, butterflies, moths, spiders and other insects during their breeding season and switch over to fruits and berries during the nonbreeding season including hackberries, elderberries, currants, serviceberries, other berries and fruits. Juniper berries are their primary diet in winter.
  • During the winter both sexes are strongly territorial when it comes to protecting their juniper patches.
  • Townsend’s Solitaires lay 3 to 8 which hatch in 14 days. Both sexes incubate and they are monogamous.
  • Townsend’s Solitaires can live to be at least 5 years of age.
