  • Violet-green Swallows are small swallows that have metallic green upperparts, iridescent purple rumps, white faces and underparts with slightly forked tails. Females are duller than males.
  • Violet-green Swallows are migratory. During the breeding season they can be found from Alaska and the Yukon in Canada south through the western states and in northern Mexico. Violet-green Swallows spend the winter mostly south of the U.S. – Mexico border although some overwinter in California. Their preferred habitats include mountains, forests, foothills, and suburban areas.
  • Violet-green Swallows eat bees, flies, ants, wasps, beetles, and leafhoppers.
  • Violet-green Swallows lay 4 to 6 eggs which hatch in 13 to 14 days. The females incubate and they are monogamous.
  • A group of barn swallows is called a “kettle” of swallows.
  • Violet-green Swallows can live to be more than 9 years of age.
