Vole Images, Facts and Information:
Genus Microtus
- Meadow Voles are found across North America, Europe, and northern Asia. They belong to the genus Microtus, a name derived from Greek that refers to their small ears. These animals are compact, stout rodents with short ears, short legs, and relatively short tails.
- They feed primarily on green vegetation such as grasses and sedges during the growing season. At other times of year, their diet shifts to grains, seeds, roots, and bark.
- The genus Microtus is commonly known as the meadow voles, although it includes many closely related vole species beyond the one specifically called the meadow vole.
