Wild Horse Images, Facts and Information:

Equus ferus caballus

  • Wild Horses are large, strong, herbivorous mammals with muscular bodies, flowing manes and tails, long legs built for speed, and keen senses of sight, hearing, and smell. Adult wild horses typically stand 13–15 hands high and can weigh 700–1,000 pounds.
  • Wild Horses are found in arid to semi-arid regions of the western United States, particularly in Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and Colorado. They inhabit open plains, desert grasslands, and mountain foothills where water sources and grazing vegetation are available.
  • Wild Horses are herbivores and graze primarily on grasses, but they also browse shrubs and forbs when forage is scarce.
  • Wild Horses live in social groups called bands, usually consisting of one dominant stallion, several mares, and their offspring. Bands often join larger herds at water sources or during migration.
  • Mares typically give birth to one foal after an 11-month gestation period. Foals can stand and walk within hours and stay close to their mothers for protection and guidance.
  • A group of horses is called a “herd.”
